Recycling at its best

January 16th, 2007 by Joy

I love making something new from something old. We found this dress in Jen’s attic in her husbands costume collection. I loved the green and said it would make a great bag. Donnie (her husband) just mentioned joking that her birthday was coming up. So I decided to make her a bag.

I just love the detail in the top part of the dress. I decided to use the elastic section at the top of the dress and just detach the sleeves. The dress was so long i used the rest of it to line the bag and one of the sleeves for a pocket on the inside. It turned out pretty cool. I loved it. I’ve got some of the dress left over I might just make one for myself. It seems all i want to make from old clothes are bags. What have you made from old clothes?

Wow, you guys do such a great job on this site!! Only one complaint… how do you make the bag??? I’m just learning some of these cute projects and I need instructions on exactly how to get started! I love the knitting stuff too and if I only had someone to teach me how to do it I think I’d be a knitting nutzo. Anyways, keep up the wonderful crafts. I just love it!!

I pretty much only make Goodwill donations out of old clothes. Cute bag though!

Heather, I’m glad you are enjoying the site! I would love to explain how i made the bag but i have no idea what i did.. Sometimes i just get an idea and just cut it out and hope it works. If i tried a tutorial on this, it would be a mess. If you want to know how we make some of our stuff check out the tutorial category. I still have a ways to go on explaining how i end up with what i made. If you lived in town or close i would love to show you the knitting basics…. It is so much fun!

Wow, that is so cute! I love how the bag came out; what a great idea. I’ve thought of using old sweathers for pillows, but haven’t done it yet…way to recycle.

about a week ago i made a pillow from an old t-shirt. it’s soft and comfy.

i’ve also made bags, totes, and skirts from pillowcases and thrifted sheets.

What a wonderful example of recycled crafting. I love your bag! I have been working on using recycled plastic bags and creating tote bags and purses. It’s so fun and very rewarding. I love that recycled crafts are virtually free to make.
