I know this is an old post, but I saw it and wanted to comment on your genius and add another tip. I once made a long jacket from the lining of a beat-up leather trenchcoat that was purely aesthetic in nature, being just the satiny lining with the arms cut out. I found some old cufflinks in my house, the kind with the chain-mail type of belt attachment that folds over on itself. They had these wonderful clear jewel-like things that changed from blue to green to purple in different light, so I sewed them into the edges of the jacket where I wanted it to close, and just put the little bolt of one into the hole of the other and secured it.

Brilliant! I haven't come up with any alternative closures ... but I will start thinking differently about things now.
