Learn to Crochet – Lesson #8

July 10th, 2007 by Heather

See all the posts in the Crochet School…

This week we are going to learn how to change colors while crocheting. I know a few of you already figured this out, as I’ve seen some beautiful multi-colored squares on the flickr group.

It is very easy to change colors when crocheting. When you’re about to change colors, work your last stitch until there are 2 loops left on your hook. Leaving a tail, draw the end of the new yarn / color through the 2 loops on your hook. Then continue working with the new color. With a large-eyed needle, weave in the tails of both balls of yarn to secure.

That’s it! Its really simple :)

Here is a great visual from about.com

Patterns

This week our patterns will be all about the color change :)

Amber Waves

Cluster Flowers Square

Maze Granny Square

Springtime Square

And don’t worry about those loose ends from all the color changes – we’ll go over how to weave those in for the next lesson!

Also, I was hoping for a bit of a check in..I’m curious how many people are still following the lessons. We had a huge sign up number, and I want to see who’s still around! Post a comment and let us know if you are still following the lessons!!

I’m still here! I’m loving these lessons.

  2. tina Says:

I read the lessons but I’m doing my own thing ;)

  3. Sarah Says:

I’m saving them for when I have a free moment. I read each one though. so I’ve got the theory down pat!

  4. Natalie Says:

I’m saving them b/c I’m way too busy right now.

  5. jeanetta Says:

i started out great and love them…. only we started moving to a different state so there are a bunch of half done squares. lol. but i print out ever pattern and put them in a floder for when we get all settled.

  6. Dawn Says:

I’m still here. I also read each one and do a little practice each week. I’m also getting ready to move (hopefully) but print out all the patterns for later.

    Thanks again!

  7. Tara Says:

I’m following along, just behind on getting the sqares done.

  8. cristina Says:

I just strarted in the midle of the crochet lessons. Went back, and went to the original post, and i’m still here for the tunisian crochet:)
Love how you do the explanations….GOOD JOB

  9. Liz Says:

I’m having a lot of fun with this, just not necessarily in order or up-to-date!! My husband and I are working on moving and househunting, and not feeling very successful :( It’s taking up a lot of our time, though, so he hasn’t been able to learn to crochet with me like he thought he would.
I’m working on my first tunisian square now, but have skipped some previous squares either because I ran out of time or because I couldn’t make it work. Heather, if we completed every planned square so far, how many should we have? (just out of curiosity…)

  10. Amanda Says:

I am following still. The lessons are very easy to learn. Thank you!! I am just a little behind, but I am catching up. Keep up the good work!!!

  11. Kymberli Says:

I’m sticking with it and learning and being inspired to go off and find all sorts of crocheting projects to try. Thank you, Heather.

  12. sfgigi Says:

I’m following still, but falling behind a bit. I’m finishing Lesson #6 now. I have to get a Tunisian hook since my regular hook is the ergonomic kind and has a very short neck.

Thanks again for great lessons. I’m having fun!

  13. Lindsay Says:

I’m still with you (but a couple weeks behind!) I haven’t been brave enough to post any of my squares to Flickr. :-)

  14. Ezgi Says:

I am still here too. But due my struggle-to-write-my-thesis I cannot get enough time to practice, I have fallen waaay much behind :( I am saving the lessons and the patterns for the summer holiday though :) Thank you so so much for the lessons :)

  15. um saif Says:

    can i join u?

  16. raynbow Says:

I’m a couple weeks behind now because life is nutty but I’m still reading and I hope to catch up eventually!

  17. Lynn Says:

I’m many many weeks behind, but I’m still following along!!

  18. Leah Says:

I haven’t done all of the patterns, but I’ve been reading each week & have at least tried the different stitches. I got a little sidetracked designing a purse after the lesson where you posted a purse pattern….but it’s done, crocheted and then felted so it won’t need a lining, and now all I want to do is design more purses, LOL.

  19. Rachel Says:

Yep, still here, but I’m getting side tracked trying other projects I’ve found.

  20. T Says:

I’m still here, but just a little behind! Trying to finish up lesson #6 so I can move on to the Tunisian crochet. Enjoying the lessons very much so far!

  21. Samantha Says:

Just found you, trying to catch up. Love this, it’s awesome and fun!

  22. Lauren Says:

Still here. 2 lessons behind, but I’m catching up! I’ve learned so much so far.

  23. Emma Says:

Hi Heather, I just found these lessons this week, and my children and I have started on them! I and my 12yos are up to lesson 2, and my 6yos, 8yod and 10yod are still working on getting lesson 1 right. I’ve made several attempts over the years to learn to knit and crochet, but have always given up in frustration! This time I am persevering, and I have 2 single crochet squares, 1 pretty pebbles, and 1 1/2 granny squares. I think I am addicted! I have a 1.5 week old baby and I can crochet while breastfeeding him so this is perfect timing!

  24. sabrina Says:

I didn’t post earlier because I was running behind, but I’m still here! Actually I’m still behind. But I wanted to post anyways. :)

  25. raynbow Says:

Just because I thought you might be interested….

I thought I’d check in again.

Obviously more than a few weeks behind now. But I just actually got to this lesson and am starting the squares!

I wanted you to know people are still enjoying your hard work even though you’re done!

    Thanks!

  26. Kathy Says:

I just found your website with the instructions…and I’ve been dying to learn to crochet. Instead of working this afternoon, I have taken the liberty of printing all the lessons and patterns that relate to each lesson. This is my gift to myself…A lesson a week.

  27. Donna Says:

I am well behind. I have had your lessons bookmarked for ages and have only just started them. I have just finished the 3 patterns on lesson 2 and just starting on the V stitch. I have printed out the rest of your lessons and the associated patterns and plan on taking them away with me over the Xmas holidays. Thanks so much for helping. I would never have learnt if it wasn’t for you.

  28. Doodee Says:

    Thanks for sharing

I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
