Easy Baby Scarf
January 1st, 2007 by Heather
Winters get really cold here, so I made up a quick pattern for a baby scarf that would be functional and cute. It is super easy and can be made in an evening.
I used Bernat Softee Baby (sport weight) and a G hook. I didn’t do a gauge because I don’t think that’s important with scarves
Chain 15.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each chain to end, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 2nd sc from hook, *skip 1 sc, sc in next sc*, repeat from * to * until end of row. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 2nd sc from hook and each sc to end of row. Turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until scarf is the length you want, I made Elizabeth’s 24″ long.
Finish with a row of reverse sc around the edge of the scarf.
Have fun making one tonight!!

Hello! Beautifiul! You will not believe this, but I was just looking for a scarf for my 8 month old the other day and couldn’t find one! Thank you!
Alex will thank you too!

What a great scarf pattern. I never thought of making scarves for my daughters when they were babies. Great idea. This pattern will be perfect for my girls. Thank you.

what if the baby chokes itself? Isn’t this a little dangerous?
April 1st, 2007 at 9:15 am
I suppose this could be dangerous if you leave the baby unattended with the scarf around their neck. But I made it for the purpose of going under a snowsuit, the baby’s hands are not near the scarf and there would be no danger at all. Plus I would never leave my baby unattended with anything around her neck.
Thanks for the comment and visiting our site!

I am new to crocheting and thought this scarf would be adorable for my daughter. However when I try to make it, each row keeps getting shorter and shorter. Can you please tell me what i am doing wrong? I would appreciate the help!

Jean,
It’s been a while and it looks like you have not gotten a response. By now you have probably already figured out the problem. If not, it might be the same thing I did when I first started crocheting. Be careful with your last stitch in each row. I realized that I was mistakingly dropping the last stitch in each row. Try counting the stitches in each row to make sure you are on the right track. I hope this helps.

Thanks Tiffany for answering Jean’s question.
We usually get email notification that a comment has been posted, otherwise I have no idea what comments have been posted, and sometimes the occasional comment gets missed if I don’t get the email
I appreciate you taking the time to formulate the answer!

I made the scarf but I could not use your pattern as you directed. I added the chain 1 after each sc, otherwise it kept getting smaller and smaller.

I agree with Janet – using your pattern as it is written results in a scarf that gets narrower and narrower, as every second row you are skipping every other stitch. I will try Janet’s suggestion (ch1 after each sc – I assume in row2) and see if it works.

Just reading the pattern seems if you don’t do a ch 1 after each sc in row 2 it will get narrower!

Very cute scarf! I tried making one and I think some directions are missing. All I got and my friend did it too was a triangle shape out of it. Could you please send me the pattern again. I love it and can’t wait to make it!
Thanks!

I love the scarf pattern……….Just what I was looking for. I love crochet, and I like to do things for my granddaughter. Thanks.
Now I’m looking for an Old-Fashioned Baby Sweater Set.

Hi everyone,
I tried this pattern 4 different times and mine keeps getting shorter as well even with the chain at the end. One chain does not make a difference when the pattern says to sc in every other sc in Row 2. Any other suggestions on what I might try?
Thanks,
Carol

I crochet all the time, and this pattern is not correct and should be removed from this website. I don’t know how all these people say what a beautiful scarf it makes using the pattern above as it will not work. If you really didn’t make it, you shouldn’t comment how nice it is.

Could you please make available the correct pattern for the Easy Baby Scarf by Heather, the pattern is missing something, even if you do what Tiffany says it still does not come out right it keeps getting smaller, maybe Heather could recheck her pattern and print the correction. Thanks

For a rectangle, you will need to have the same number of stitches for each row.
You definitely need to add the chain in between each sc. Then sc in each sc and in each ch 1 space

Great comment, love the design of the site too.

I found some old cufflinks in my house, the kind with the chain-mail type of belt attachment that folds over on itself. They had these wonderful clear jewel-like things that changed from blue to green to purple in different light, so I sewed them into the edges of the jacket where I wanted it to close, and just put the little bolt of one into the hole of the other and secured it.
