Quick and Easy Felt Appliqués

January 9th, 2007 by Candace

I have really been into using felt lately. It’s like the wonder material – you can make so much with it, it’s inexpensive and so easy to use. I had bought some little boys shirts for cheap ($3 at Walmart, and they are nice, too) and decided to use them to stitch some felt applique’s on. So I decided on a catepillar and a lion. Once I cut out the shapes I needed in the colors I wanted, I added any embellishments (like eyes, mouths, ears, etc) and then just secured them on the shirt using a blanket stitch.

I finished up with a few other accents and voila – cute (and boyish) felt applique shirts. Each one cost approx $4 and about an hour to make from start to finish.

So cute! I’ve been wanting to do this, but wasn’t sure how the felt would hold up being washed. Did you use wool felt?

  2. Candace Says:

For the catepillar, yes, but for the Lion I used synthetic. If you turn them inside out when washing and wash on the gentle cycle, I’m sure the wool felt will be fine. I actually gave the catepillar shirt to Jen’s son for his birthday, so when she washes it, I’ll get her to post a comment in this section about how it washed.

Those are adorable! Felt is so deliciously cheap…I always stock up, not quite sure what to make with it. Now you’ve given me some inspiration to try my hand at some cute appliques :)

  4. Christina Says:

You’ve got me hooked on felt LOL! I have been wondering what else to do with it, This will be added to the list of things to try!

  5. Billie Says:

You have such amazing crafts!! Where in the world do you find your ideas?

  6. Melody Says:

Candace…they turned out adorable. It is fun for me to see the finished project as you just showed me the felt last Friday!! Way to go. Keep up the great work on Crafty Daisies…I love, love, love it!!

  7. Candace Says:

Thanks everyone and thanks Billie for your comment – for me, I find a lot of my ideas out of necessity. My son’s first birthday is coming up and is a safari theme and I wanted him to have a shirt to wear, so that’s where I came up with the Lion. I also read a lot of other crafting blogs that I get inspiration from. Check out some of our links on the side bar – there are some great and inspiring craft blogs, and before long you’ll have ideas that just start flowing :)

[...] This is my felt addiction pile. I’m telling you, if there was a felt shortage in the continental US, I fear I may be to blame. I can’t stop buying this stuff. Fourty sheets I have, plus six different yards of the yummy, delightful fabric. Such fun colors and great projects for so cheap! [...]

This is such a cute idea. Did you use any type of stabilizer when sewing the felt onto the shirt? Or finish the back in any special way?

    Thanks for sharing

I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:

  12. Nicole Says:

I love the caterpillar idea. My question is what did you use to sew the edges? What kind of thread?

  13. Amethyst Says:

Nicole, she likely used embroidery thread, that’s the usual thing to use for applique and blanket stitches. I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to using embroidery thread, but I have learned one thing: seperate a thread or two from the bundle, don’t use the whole thing and try to get it through the needle!

  14. LeAnn Says:

I’ve been working on a project just like this, but I’m making the t-shirts too. My plan is to use therm-o-web to iron on the felt design and then blanket-stitch the edges to make it more durable, Yours is so cute!
Right now I’m just looking for ideas of what to put on the shirts, I love your caterpillar!

  15. Charlotte Says:

Thanks for the idea! I made the caterpillar one and put a picture of it on my blog – it came out very cute!
