Taggies
January 17th, 2007 by Jen LoveI enjoy making this simple and inexpensive baby gift for the dozen showers I attend each year. I stole the idea from a costlier version in a local store. Inevitably, instead of enjoying his teddy bear’s cute face, my son turns the bear upside down and clings to the label. So I decided to indulge him with a small blankie of only labels.
1. I choose 2 fabrics of different texture, honestly with the mom’s taste in mind, since little one can’t say yet. I like flannel, corduroy, fleece, bright prints in fabrics that can take many washings. Or I like to pick a theme that would go with the family, like my son has a “Let’s Build It” taggie covered with tools in honor of my carpentry-skilled husband. Once you have stock-piled some fun fabrics and ribbon, the cost will feel next to nothing, literally like $1-2. The discount section of your fabric store is a great place to look.
2. Cut a 12 inch square out of your 2 fabrics. I made a cardboard template that I just lay down and draw the lines with a pencil for cutting.
3. Choose your ribbons and cut out in different lengths, usually 3-5″. Fold over to picture how long you want the ribbons to stick out. Line up right sides of fabric together. Fold the ribbon in half and tuck the folded end inside the 2 fabrics. I stagger the lengths a little and vary the width and texture of ribbon around the fabric.
4. I leave one corner unpinned where I sew a long, wide ribbon, for a handle, caddy-corner after the other sides are sewn. Sew the other 3 sides up to the handle corner, removing each pin as you get to it and making sure the ribbons are straight.
5. Turn the fabric inside out, tuck in the 4th corner, insert the final ribbon and sew on top of the fabric. You can also embroider the child’s name to personalize it, or I usually sew a large, colorful button on top -just something else for them to play with.
This is a great way to use up any scrap fabric and scrap ribbon from other projects!

[...] However, I will not be using it all up for the diapers, so I think I’ll be making a taggie for Elizabeth out of it, and then I will have so much left over. What should I make with it? Any thoughts or suggestions? [...]

i just found your blog and have enjoyed reading it very much. you are very talented.
the taggie is very cute. a bloggy friend sent me one when my baby was born a few months ago. my only concern is that the button could be a choking hazard for babies. i think the embroidery is a very cute idea.

I bought a fleece taggie and it’s very expensive AND fleece is not as soft after number of washings. I can’t wait to make my own out of minky and silk! Thank you for the instructions and advice. A word of caution: buttons are a chocking hazard and are not allowed anywhere in the crib. It’s amazing how long an older baby/toddler can “work” on the button to get it off.

I was doing a search on how to make these and I couldn’t wait to get home and start. It turned out great and now I have to make MORE for firends they loved them that much. Maybe I should start charging? LOL
Thanks for the inspiration.

thanks for the instructions! Ever since I’ve seen the name brand “taggies”, I’ve been wanting to make 2 for my twin girls since the “taggies” brand is pretty expensive PLUS I wanted muslin (breathable) material because both my girls like to fall asleep with their blankies on their faces (i watch them until they fall asleep then take away the blankets!). I just bought the material today so I’m excited to have found this website.

Toile Fabric Will Be Perfect For Your Home…
Toile fabric is the most beautiful and elegant of all the different types of fabric. Toile fabric is named after a fabric that was made in France in the early 19th century….

Super cute blankie! I saw it on google.
Just a warning……the Taggie company aggressively goes after anyone who tries to make or give instructions on these blankets.
I encourage everyone I know to make them and give them away (not sell), as often as they can!!
It is hard to believe a company that is suppose to be created by 2 working craft fair moms would be so greedy as to attack workin stiffs just trying to make ends meet!

This is just what I was looking for. I’ve got a new nephew (1 wk old) and two friends are having boys in January as well as a shower for a boy next weekend! I’d go broke making quilts for all these boys, but I sure can make one of these! Thank you for the directions!

If you want one of these for your kids, PLEASE make them and do not buy them from the Taggies company. They are a horrible company who is harassing any one who makes anything with a ribbon loop on it. They have constantly threatened crafters on Etsy and other sites. In fact the person with the patent DID NOT invent this product. It has been made since the 70′s but they decided to patent ribbon loops in between two pieces of fabric and are harassing anyone who uses loops of ribbon. Make your own it will be better quality, cheaper, and it will not support a company who spends its time trying to find others to jerk around.
