Easy, Inexpensive Dog Bed
February 9th, 2007 by CandaceI never thought our pug, Jaxon, ever cared about where he slept. This dog will sleep anywhere, and all day if he likes, so I thought a dog bed was just a dog bed. Until I got him one that clearly did not meet his standards. He would’ve rather slept on the hardwood floor than in this thing. So out it went and I was left with the dilemma of spending yet another $20 on a dog bed that he may or may not like. And would most definitely be ugly.
So I decided to go the cheaper (and better looking) route by making one myself. I bought a cheap, yet fluffy, pillow from Walmart and some canvas fabric on sale at JoAnn’s that would match our decor.
I’m new to sewing and I didn’t have a pattern to go by, just what was in my head, so for all you experienced sewers out there, please excuse my ignorance and don’t laugh at the diagram I put together below. I mean it – don’t laugh!
Okay, so you get enough fabric to completely cover your pillow. I got a standard sized one and used just a smidge over a yard (a yard x 45″). First you’ll hem the top of your fabric, one of the shorter sides (Figure 1). Then you’ll fold your fabric in half length-wise (so the opposite side is on the outside) and sew the edges together (Figure 2). You’ll finish by sewing the bottom of the fabric together (Figure 3), so the only opening will be at the top. Turn your pillowcase inside out and then slide your pillow in, tuck the remaining fabric underneath and you’re done!
I don’t know how to do a zipper, but if you know how to do this, then have at it and you can close it. I chose to let the fabric be a little longer, and then just tucked the longer portion underneath. This reason was two-fold: one, so I could accomodate a larger, longer pillow in the future, and second, I was lazy and just wanted a quick fix for the puppy.
From start to finish this project cost $9 and about 20 minutes. At the end you will have a functional dog bed that looks as fabulous as it is comfy. And the best part of it all is it’s washable!

Love the fabric! And great job without a pattern
February 9th, 2007 at 10:05 am
Oh my gosh, that picture with the dog is adorable!
February 18th, 2007 at 8:55 am
Cool! We have 2 dogs – one that insists on sleeping under the bed and the other clearly wants something better than a throw rug to sleep on. This is simple! I might opt for velcro on the open end and make a few to switch out weekly. Thanks!
February 18th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
we’ve had the same problem finding a pet bed our 17 year old retriever would like. you’ve given me the motivation (and inspiration) to make one for him. Maybe i’ll make one for our cat so he’ll gunk that up with cat hair instead of my sofa and bedpillows!
thanks!
February 18th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Great for a small dog, but what about my 80 pounder? Should I simply purchase several pillows?
February 18th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Great idea, I’m going to attempt my own. It might be a challenge because I have two larger dogs. I might try stuffing it myself with cotton stuffing and some cedar chips (helps with smells). I love the pattern you picked out and you little pug is quite photogenic.
February 19th, 2007 at 6:30 am
so i’m reading lifehacker today when I see a black pug… I think to myself “Wow, that dog looks EXACTLY like Jaxson (even the one crazy eye thing). So I go to email the link to tim when I realize it’s your site and it is Jaxson!!!” LOL… go you for getting linked on lifehacker!

[ Let me try this again... ]
So many crafties are so so so very inaccurate with their effort estimates.
Unless JoAnn’s Fabric and Wal-Mart are attached to your house, I find it incredibly hard to believe this took a “total” of 20 minutes.
I imagine your trip was an absolute minimum of 30 minutes from driveway to the stores … to your driveway again.
And subtract $1-$3 in gas, depending on your home’s distance from said stores.
So, 50 minutes minimum, $1-$3 in gas, and $9 in actual materials.
Everything is in the details. That $20 bed in front of you at the store (where you’re already picking up food…) doesn’t sound quite as outrageous anymore.
February 19th, 2007 at 9:46 am
Well yes, Sue, if you want to be nit-picky, the actual time it took to complete this bed wasn’t 20 minutes to the second. But the point of saying it only took 20 minutes was to encourage people with limited sewing and crafting skills that it wouldn’t be an all day project. And technically JoAnn’s and Walmart aren’t attached to my house (and what a drained bank account I would have if that were the case), but they are pretty darn near close, seeing as both are within 2 miles of me. But thanks for taking the time to do a total breakdown of the project – I still like my alternative better
February 19th, 2007 at 10:03 am
For larger animals, you could make your own pillow with muslin and stuffing (muslin is super cheap). Then make a cover as described in the article. To sew the muslin pillow, just make it like the cover but sew up the open end (it can look crappy since it will be in the cover
).
If you want to sew the open end of the cover, use a slipstitch (see here: http://www.geocities.com/diycat/resources/slipstitch.html). If you really aren’t confident with sewing, there are two tricks to try. First, try invisible thread (available at any sewing/craft store). Second, for the “it’s not a mistake, it’s on purpose” method, use a bright color of thread that contrasts with your fabric and just sew around the entire edge of the cover (cross stitch thread and a larger needle work best).
February 19th, 2007 at 10:28 am
This just in – Minute rice also takes longer than a minute…
February 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I bet it took Sue longer than 20 minutes to come up with that email!!
Great job Candace!!!
February 20th, 2007 at 6:54 am
Just finding this great idea via Lifehacker…
Any suggestions on a material that will hold up to a chewer? I am not a sewer, but I am also not made of money, and my dogs have each chewed up their last two fancy-shmancy store-bought beds. If I could make something that would hold up for longer than a day, this would definitely be worth my time and effort. So far, they’ve chewed through denim and corduroy…
February 20th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
@Pam:
That’s tough, I’m not sure any fabric will do the job for long. Timbuk2 (http://www.timbuk2.com) makes durable bags from ballistic nylon and another type of nylon (they call it Cordura, not sure if that is the actual name). Check those types of fabrics out at the store and see what you think. It might be worthwhile to spray the pillows with no-bite formula (you can find one that worked for my cat at Walmart for cheap) and see if that works before dropping cash on thicker, more expensive fabric. I sprayed a leather chair the cat was chewing and she will still lay on it without biting.
@Sue:
Have you seen store pet beds lately? I would rather make my own with cute fabric than choose between pink leopard print and paisley.
February 20th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Someone notify Rachel Ray that her “30 Minute Meals” is also a sham!
It takes me a least 30 minutes just to go to the grocery store, shop and come home.
Candace, that’s a cute dog and the project is a nice, simple alternative to buying a dog bed.
February 21st, 2007 at 12:40 pm
@Beki – Thanks for the idea to check Timbuk2. I’ve spent hours on that site lusting for their messenger bags, so I know exactly what you mean by Cordura. Definitely something to look around for – never thought of it in relation to my dogs! And we use Bitter Apple for accident spots on the carpet, but not for their beds. I never even thought of using it there. Duh! So thanks for the reminder on that too.
Candace, I’ve been looking through your archives. Your projects are so cool! I’m glad I discovered your site. I know of several people I’m going to send the URL to.
February 21st, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Is it bad that hubby first forwarded this to me because of the pug, and secondly because of the bed? (We who own 2 pugs [I'm trying to convince him of a third] and have a total of 3 dog beds, not including the human beds and chairs that are also theirs [the Lazyboy has been renamed the LazyPug for a reason.)
Anyway, love the fabric! I’m going to have to wander more in Jo-Ann’s. I’ve been heading past the fabric lately.

This quick and simple dog bed is the perfect craft to do with my 10 year old daughter….and we have unused pillows right here in the house so we’ll only need some snazzy fabric…
Our new arrival comes to our home on Sat. March 10th and we wanted to make something to welcome her home.
Thankyou for the quick and easy (and inexpensive) idea. And I’m sure our baby girl ‘Abby” (Yorkie-Poo) will love it too.

I like your dog bed. Great idea. I could definitely sew that within 20 minutes and be very happy with the results. Thanks for the suggestion.

Finally a dog bed project that I think I can do. Im new to sewing and have looked every where for a simple idea for a dog bed. Its a great idea and thanks for shareing it with us.

Very interesting article, but what if you have no talent and is of the male species!! LOL. I bought a beautiful bed at http://www.precious-pets-paradise.com and have been happy with it every since. For us non-talented people, I would recommend this site before attempting this project!

How about getting a square pillow that fits into a regular pillowcase? The pattern options aren’t as plentiful, but there’s no sewing at all (just insert pillow and fold over excess fabric).
For large dogs, I think buying a pet bed would be best. These folks donate all of their profit to help homeless pets: http://www.perfectdogbeds.com/index.html.

great idea i just got a 12 week old cocker spanile and im 13 comeing upwith 500 to pay for the dog was hard and now he sleep in my bed but make the dog bed was simple and easy and hershey really likes it
i think im gonna show this site to my best friend becky she has a poodle
September 23rd, 2007 at 4:47 pm
Great job. If you have a super large dog you can buy 2 yards of the home decor fabric that both Walmart and Joann’s put on sale. Then you just fold it in half lengthwise and sew the two sides. You can then sew on a strip of velcro at the open end and stuff with comforters you are ready to get rid of or buy at goodwill. Easily comes open to wash up. I have been doing this for years and try to catch the sales on either black or blue denim for a sturdy bed. total project price= very low. Total time= not long!!
October 6th, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Great idea! I also made a bed for my english bulldog. I bought about 7/8 yard of fleece that was on sale for $0.99/yard and some poly fiberfill. I drew out the shape of a dog bone and cut two matching pieces, sewed it up and stuffed it……….wallah dog bed.
October 8th, 2007 at 6:25 pm
There’s materials for cheap dog beds everywhere. My favorite is to be on the lookout for couches being thrown away: if the cushions are removable and clean, voila. Then go to the fabric store and buy some vinyl remnants; buy a piece big enough to wrap around the cushions; fold the vinyl on the back like you are wrapping a present, seal with big swaths of duct tape and there you are. The vinyl holds the multiple cushions in place and also gives you a waterproof bed (good for older pets who might dribble a bit). You can then make a cute, washable cover for it or wrap a blanket over it and if you think the vinyl’s too cold, put a piece of fleece in between it and the cover (or make a fleece cover). If the thought of someone’s couch cushion oogs you out, go to the fabric store and buy a chunk of upholstery cushion, they sell it by the yard.
Another idea is to scrounge up an old/ugly comforter or blankets; cut to size, sew it shut (see the muslin suggestion above).
Yes, this takes time, but if you have big dogs, it’s the only way unless you want to spend big bucks. Plus, any of the above will be way cushier than anything you buy.

Wow…. love the simple design and the fabric, and for those who can’t find some fabric their animal likes, use an old sweater/Jumper, sew up the bottom and cut off the arms sew the holes there, leave the head space for filling (pillow etc) and add a bit of valcro and there you have it a small ish (depends on size of sweater/jumper) pillow perfect for your pet, and they will feel better if they are alone as they would be used to seeing you in the sweater and now they have it as a comforter. i have a mad rabbit who loves lying on my jumper so this was perfect.

Nice Job. I too am not much of a sewer so I used a king size pillow sham and just stuffed a pillow in it. I have also made a cover big enough for 2 pillows for my dog.

Love the idea of home-made doggie beds. Have 3 young dogs, a Golden Retriever and 2 Shitzus. Have tried many time to give the retriever a nice warm bed. Trouble is she tends to chew them, drag them around until they totally disintegrate. The Shitzus will sleep anywhere – mostly on me. Has anyone any good ideas for the Retriever. I certainly will not be buying anymore – nome-made will have to do but I want her to be happy and cozy, comfortable at night
December 1st, 2007 at 3:16 am
This is great!!! I had never considered making the beds myself. I have two huge dogs, a golden retriever and black lab. They like to sleep on my stuff, my clothes, blankets, pillows, and most of all my bed. And imagine having two large dogs selfishly taking up most of my twin bed every night for the past 4 years!!! I’m pretty excited about getting my bed back and not spending a hundred (yes 50 dollars each minimum for large beds)!!!
January 5th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
We have two retrievers and the price of even one large dog bed of decent quality runs about $60 and at that “cheap” price you can’t even take of the cover to launder. So for about the same amount of money (and the patience for a sale) we bought a TWIN SIZED FOAM MATTRESS TOPPER from Target, cut it into four pieces (doubling them to make two beds), and with the fabric idea, stitched up three of the sides and hot glued a zipper on the remaining side…Voila! Our dogs love them and it was so easy that we have made a few different covers to change things up sometimes.
January 9th, 2008 at 1:38 am
Thats a great saving! I really don’t want to spend more money for pet beds. I have been looking for sometime now for good dog beds and I beleive I found a great corner, really It was inexpensive. I am going to try this one.
March 10th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Your project worked for me! Yay! I have three St. Bernards (yes, 3!!!) and they either slept on the couch or sprawled out on my bed. I bought baby crib mattresses off of craigslist ($40 for three) and bought super cute fabric (on clearance at WalMart) that matched my decor, and voila! Instant dog beds that actually look great! Thanks for the easy to follow pattern.
April 6th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
i just tried this after reading all the replies. you need couch cushions, a toddler bed sheet, and a toddler bed mattress cover. put the cushions together, the same rectangle shape as the bedsheet, cover with the mattress cover, and then cover with the bed sheet. i used our love seat cushions. good luck!

I think this is such a cute idea. I have been thinking of making my new puppy a bed with fabric I can choose. Its definately fun and creative to do something like this on your own… I was thinking of making a few different covers like fleece for winter and something like quilting fabric for summer. don’t listen to the negative comments, I think its great you enjoy creating like I do. I enjoy spending time on my animals… its not about how quick it takes, Its the enjoyment you get out of it as well.

For those of you that are looking for a material that will hold up to a chewer, I use canvas. I know it can be a little more expensive, but it really stands the test of time with those sharp teeth. The heavier the canvas the better. The challenge is in actually sewing it. I had to get a special needle for my machine, but it ended up working great, and my little chewer doesn’t even try anymore. I hope this helps!

I love it but I have a large German Sheppard with hip dysplasia. I want to make a large pillow bed but I’m not sure how much fabric and then what about the stuffing? Any suggestions would be welcome. I’ve looked for large pillows but can’t find any large enough (that are economical too). Thank you. Diane
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:41 am
If your dog has a lot of hip pain, you will definitely want to use something thick and soft. I have two German Shepherds and have been using a piece of twin-size egg crate mattress toppers, folded into thirds as the filling for their dog beds. They run about $14, I think. I replace them about every 12-18 months when they get too flat. I really like the idea of using thrift store comforters, as they would be machine washable. But I think something foam-based would provide more softness and support for sore hips.
I like the old couch cusion idea, but that wouldn’t be washable. The idea above about wrapping them in vinyl (an old tablecloth, maybe?) is brilliant.
What an informative discussion this is! I see a treasure-hunting trip to the thrift store in my future. Doggies need new beds!

Cool dog bed, its probably way too small for our aging Golden Retriever, but he is a dog with taste, and so I know he’d love it!! A simple fix for the opening would be some sew in velcro – zips aren’t that difficult, the most difficult part is attempting the first one! I still remember my first zip, quite fond of them know though!
November 12th, 2008 at 8:36 am
I love this idea! Going to try it, but since I just have smaller scraps of material, I’m going to actually make a crazy quilt cover – just blocks-not hard, and it will be sort of a fun project, though more time consuming than the single piece of fabric. I also have a bag of poly fill, and an old sheet, so I’m going to make my own pillow, and then make the quilt-cover (have a piece of material big enough for the backing). I’m exciting to use up my scraps, and I think those people who think it’s less time consuming/cheaper to buy a bed-go for it, but leave the creative people who are kind enough to share their ideas with the world alone!
November 19th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
I can’t wait to try this. My dog is in need of a new cover for her bed! Thanks for sharing!

Love this idea.
I’ve been wanting to sew a coushin for my 16 year old dog. He has accidents and I thought putting a dog coushin in his chair would save my furniture.
I have an old shower curtain around so I think I’ll put that on the pillow first and then wrap it in material . Thanks for the instructions.

Just wanted to say that you can make this even cheaper. My puppy wanted a bed in my daughters room also. So we used an old think comforter, cut it into smaller squares, and used an old sweatshirt and cut off the sleeves and top (to make a square). Sewed altogether, stuffed the blanket pieces inside. And he had a bed. This was almost free as these were items we were to get rid of. So dont even spend the $9 or the trip to the store, use what you have. If you have a larger dog, use several old pillows or comforters, old sweaters, jackets or whatever you have in the house. The top can be a different fabric than the bottom. Have fun with it!!
December 12th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Great idea, Candace. Thank you for sharing. We are bringing home our puppy this weekend and I decided to make her a bed that can grow with her. I did not want to spend $20 or more for a huge bed she will be lost in or one that will fit her now and she will outgrow quickly. I picked up some paw print material at Walmart and my husband suggested using the old bed pillows. His thought is our scent will still be in them to help her adjust when we are not home. I agree with the open end and folding over; I made the cover large enough for 2 pillows and folded over 1 for now, when needed will add the other pillow.

Great ideas!!!
My team at school has decided to do a themed basket for a fundraiser and our theme is “Doggie Basket”. I have been delegated to make a dog bed for a 50 to 70 lb. dog.
I don’t own dogs, but have enjoyed reading all these wonderful, creative ideas.
I will look for a cushion (couch size) or a large bed pillow and make a pillow case that is overlapped in the back for ease of washing.
Thanks for this website!!!

If you are not big on sewing at all, or do not have a machine you can also do this by buying fleece and instead of sewing the edges you cut strips into the ends and then tie them together. I am sure this makes no since at all so you can just check out this site…

I have two large dogs and looked around the house for old pillows that would fit. The only thing I could find was a feather top pillow that doesn’t fit any of the beds in our house so is tucked away. Any ideas for how to spilt that into two (the dogs won’t sleep on the same bed) without the feathers flying everywhere?

I was just thinking (because I don’t sew). I made a fleece blanket a few years ago where you just tie knots all the way around it. I’m thinking I’ll try that. My dog chews zippers. She has ruined 4 expensive beds. This way she will have nothing to chew on!!!

I love this idea! And what an adorable dog!!!!
As a chi owner I can basicly put my dog in an egg box!
But for a bigger dog, keep an eye out for old mattresses and couches.
We’ll be fostering big dogs soon, and I think I’ll try that.
And it’s a great way to reuse old mattresses that are otherwise wasted.

You now can proudly call yourself a sewer !!! and good on you !! YOU GO GIRL !!!
Zippers are fairly easy to put in your machine should have a zipper foot….. it is all practice…. just grab and old zipper and scraps of fabric and practice….. you will get the hang of it in no time …… keep going and keep experimenting….. if your still unsure of where to start with them…. U Tube is a great source of information for just about everything…..
take care and happy sewing !!
