Making a onesie into a shirt
March 29th, 2007 by HeatherMy daughter is really tall and thin, so she outgrows her onesies in length before she outgrows them in body size. I hated the fact that she would only wear them for a couple of months and they were still in nearly new condition, but they were no longer useful. I decided to make some into shirts for her, so that she can get more wear and use out of them.
I started with a onesie that was too small lengthwise.
I then cut off the bottom snap part right above the leg elastic. I used a ruler to make sure I cut it straight across.
I finished the edge of the shirt using the rolled hem on my serger. However, if you don’t have a serger you could simply finish the edge with a zig zag stitch and then sew a hem.
And there you have it – a cute shirt that can be used for a little bit longer!

This is an excellent idea! I’m surprised I haven’t heard this one before.

Very clever idea. Babies grow so fast it’s a shame to waste their clothes.

Good Idea. I never thought of doing that. But I did think about taking an older/disliked onesie and cutting off the snaps part. Then take that part and sew it together to where the snaps are about two-four inches (depending on how much I need for them to fit Peyton) and then using it as a onesie extender.

Very cute! I wish I had a sewing machine to try this with!

OMG I found your site through “Stumble” the Firefox add-on, and I am SO glad I did. I only wish I’d have found you sooner! Our son is 6 years old and we have a 1 year old daughter. Both of our kids are on the skinny side and very tall, and this idea would have saved us TONS of money on onesies/shirts! My Mom has a sewing machine, and I’m digging out ALL of the onesies that our little girl has just outgrown and taking them over there today to try it out. Also, thanks for the idea with the elastic/buttons in the waist, We’ll be trying this one out too. I’ll let you know if I can make it work for me as well as you did. *Tish Holmes, McConnell AFB, KS*

I tried to think so, but i found it was not as the same in the actual process. As you mentioned, I still have doubts, but really thank you for sharing!
