Polymer Clay Pens

May 28th, 2007 by Joy

I have found so many fun things to do with my polymer clay this was my first try at a pen for Candace on her birthday.

I always knew that this stuff would be a good time but didn’t think it would be this fun! You basically construct everything as you normally would, bake at the same time and degree that the instructions say, just be careful when touching the pen tip after baking as it will be quite hot.

Then thanks to Joanna’s tips on making canes in different colors I came up with this. It makes me so happy to write with it.

What a neat idea Joy! I’m going to make some of these for Christmas gifts, quick and easy!!

How did you do the second one?

  3. Kristy Says:

Do you bake the clay with the pens?

This is a great idea. Something to think about is to put the clay on the pen up to the point where the pen tip portion can be removed. I know bic pens I’ve used in the past that have my name on the barrel, when the ink would run out, i would pop the pen part out and replace with a new pen part using the same barrel. i’d hate for that pen to be useless once the ink runs outl.

Such a cute idea! I’ve been wanting to try experimenting with clay, and this may be a good first-time project. :-)

I’m impressed that you managed to bake those with the ink still inside! I’ve always taken it out first, baked the pen, and re-inserted it. Making pens is such fun (as is writing with them!) Here are some cane-covered pens I’ve made, all in a red/white/blue color scheme, which is perfect for today: http://www.polkadotcreations.com/gifts/other/americanapens.jpg :-)

    That’s a cute idea

the pink one at the bottom is really something! i’ve never tried them simply because i was convinced the pens would melt or some other disaster involving plastic and ink might happen!

Thanks everyone for your great comments. So great to see your work too Lisa.. You guys should check those out! I bake my pens at 265 for 30min and have never had any problems with the ink or melting the pen. Can’t wait to see what you guys come up with! Happy poly crafting!

Disclaimer: Since I wrote this post I have since discovered that most pens that are clear plastic melt in the oven. I have melted 3 since this post. I’m not sure why, but if you are trying this I would suggest using a sturdier pen. Perhaps the colored plastic has something to do with it. I used Papermate pens for these. Let me know how that goes!
