Inspiration to Bake
June 20th, 2007 by Jen LoveI fell in love with a pattern for an old-fashioned apron from Amy Butler’s “In Stitches” book. But let me tell you it was not as easy as it looks. What I thought was going to be a hour project turned into one that lasted on and off from late afternoon to midnight! But I am very pleased with what I learned and with the outcome. I am only an intermediate sewer and have never followed a pattern from start to finish so that was my first accomplishment. But I also learned to: fold the trim over evenly with the fabric to get the most height out of my trim, measure my pleats (instead of sewing random ones), and do this tricky wrong sided sewing that overturned to show a finished waistband. So check out it out if you are interested in sharpening these skills. The book’s directions and diagrams were pretty clear and I can’t wait to make another, which should go much faster!
My cousin Roxannah (who is a novice at sewing but still turned out a rockin’ apron) and I were pretty tired but excited about the finished product that we twirled around to show off! Please notice the towel loop above the pocket and the pleated front!
Notice, please, we spent all night sewing these aprons! Then woke up early to bake for breakfast of course! Grandma would be so proud!

Those are rockin’ aprons! I really love the towel hook … I’m in the midst of making an apron myself (from The Apron Book, which is really fun), so I am going to have to remember that neat little detail. Also, that Alexander Henry fabric is so great!

Adorable aprons! I’m inspired to bust out the Kitchenaid mixer and make cupcakes all day!

Those look great! I bought that book and am so inspired by everything in it, but as a beginning sewer, it is all a bit intimidating! I’ve been making things out of Lotta Jansdotter’s Simple Sewing, though – mostly aprons

Lovely aprons! I keep meaning to make one of these (I have had the book for quite awhile)… soon hopefully:)

Your site has really made me want to start sewing. Can you please recommend to me a good but inexpensive and portable (or at least mini) sewing machine?? My email is [email protected] if anyone else wants to help me! thank you!

I have been eyeing that pattern so its not as easy as it may look. hmmm I might have to hold off on that one untill I have a baby sitter. I love the book and have gifts planed out for most of the patterns.
Love the fabric you picked out so cute!!

I think you did a wonderful job for someone who is only an intermediate seamstress! I know what you mean by that tricky wrong-sided sewing thing for the waistband. I do it all the time. Once you’ve done it a few times, you’ll ‘get it’ and you’ll see it isn’t tricky at all! Oh…and the towel loop is genius!

They are just gorgeous. The towel loop is a great idea. I can see by the photo how you are inspired to cook. I too have started to wear aprons and always wonders why my mum did. They are great.

Love them, Jen!!! Yes, your grandma would have been VERY proud of you! Your mom sure is. Mom

Your aprons came out great! How adorable! I found the same thing with the simple leather handled shoulder bag (same book). I love how mine came out but it took 3-4 hours instead of the one or so I had thought it would. I am only a beginner at sewing, but I still thought it would be quicker.

Great aprons – are we going to see the tea towel swap entries… I wonder if any of them would look good with these aprons???

You did a beautiful job – and that towel loop is genius! I usually favour a full length apron with a towel tucked through the waistband but I think perhaps I need to make one of these beautiful creations …

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.
