Craft Room Chaos
March 7th, 2007 by HeatherMy husband took time last weekend to frame in and add walls around my craft area in the basement, making it a full fledged room. Yay! The problem is, my crafts are out of control and my room is reflecting that. With all the yarn, fabric, threads, felt, scrapbooking supplies…it looks like a craft store exploded in there!
I’m looking for some organizing tips! I need help getting this under control. How do you store your scrapbooking supplies? Your yarn? Fabric? Miscellaneous craft supplies? Beads?
Thank you for your ideas, and I’m sure my husband thanks you too (he’s tired of looking at the clutter in there )

LifeOrganizers.com has some good tips. And have you looked at Heather Bailey’s studio? There’s lots of inspiration to be seen there!

Do you have an Ikea in your town? We went out and with a budget of $1000 got:
Four of the same tables: one for my comptuer, one for the TV/Stero, one for scrapbooking, and one for sewing
Four cabinets: two for knitting/crafting books and magazines, one for sewing and one for scrapbooking
Three dressers with 6 drawers each: one for scrapbooking, one for yarn, one for knitting needles/fabric
Then I use a LOT of the rubbermaid plastic shoe boxes for my crafts. And on each table I have those rubbermaid drawer that you can find at Bed,Bath & Beyond to organize my stuff.
My craft room is the room over the garage - so it’s pretty big… but that’s how I keep it all together!

I try to organize by medium…needle felting, block printing supplies, sewing supplies, stationary/scrapbooking supplies. for me, this helps when i go to start an idea, all the things i need are in one place.
happy organizing!!

I use clear plastic containers and lots of shelvings. Unfortunately I rent so I can not install brackets on the wall.

I use jars for ribbon and other things, like buttons. Greg put shelves up everywhere and I finally have it just the way I want. I used the Cropper Hopper 12 x 12 vertical paper holders for my paper addiction. I think I have photos on my Flickr of my craft room, if not, let me know and I will post them.

Hello, I am in the process of organizing my craft room now that we just built in our basement. I purchased a great light that covers most of the 8 foot counter at lowes on clearance for $10. I bought some accent fun lights just to be cute at Christmas tree shoppe. I bought standard white plastic coated metal shelving at Lowe’s and they cut it to my measurements. I then spray painted the shelving for an accent in the room rather than just big white shelves. I bought a magnetic tool strip to hold the scissors that I am using and the other small cutter tools and such so they are at my fingertips but not on the work surface. I bought some silver shower baskets for $1.29 from Christmas Tree Shoppe also to hold glue guns, small scrap papers and such which will also be mounted on the wall. I opted to use a laminate counter top put at a height that I can comfortably stand without bending over because I have found that I do not like to constantly be in a sitting position when crafting. The countertop was $80.00 and my husband built the base for it. I am using the underneath of the counter top for storage of my stamping items and sewing items by putting them in roller bins also spray painted a different accent color. I am going to put a curtain across the front of the counter (have not gotten to that as of yet). I bought a nice compartment container for under $20 at Lowes also to hold small items and medium items like brads, glue sticks, embellishments. I purchased a label maker (BJ’s $29.99 includes Dymo personal labelmaker, batteries and 3 different cartridges -$6.99 a piece elsewhere), so that I can know exactly what is where. I purchased some wall mounted paper holders from Staples which I spray painted also to hold my stencils and such. I am using a dowl rod with holders to put all of my ribbons on so that they can unroll easily (not on wall yet). In the top right corner I am going to put in a small 15 inch lcd tv so that I can watch HGTV while crafting!!!
You can easily organize your craft room with accessories that do not cost tons of money. I am still searching for bargains!!
I would love some more feedback from people for paper storage. The storage racks that I see are $59 and up!! If anyone has a great solution for less money let me know!!! I have some pictures online your welcome to check out!!
I have pictures!! email me at [email protected].
