Fair Display
September 23rd, 2008 by SimoneI’m participating in our local street fair this weekend and am playing around with some display ideas. What do you think about these:
To show off the earrings, I’m using cheapo champagne glasses filled with glass chips from the dollar store. They are positioned on a bed tray covered with a velvet remnant. I tried to follow the rainbow spectrum (Roy G. Biv) in lining up the earrings. The height of the bed tray lifts the display a little closer to the customer.
For this display I painted clothes pins and their holders, slipped the rings over these newly fashioned “ring holders,” added a doily, and lined them all up on a cake stand. I’m planning on putting little stickers with the ring size on the bottom of the pins. Not quite sure what Plan B will be if it’s a really windy day. Maybe I should bring a little basket with me in case the wind decides to bowl over the pins.
Speaking of baskets, this colander holds to-go-shopping bags. In their rolled up state, these bags reminded me of owls, which in turn made me think of nests, causing me to rustle around my house for something nest shaped to hold the bags.
Yes, dumpster diving is a worthwhile activity. This display is a record player stand I found on the street. The larger bags can be suspended with S-hooks and the LP holder section supports smaller bags.
How do you like to display your wares?

I like your displays. The ring holders are great because they will make the rings easy to see and to handle but difficult to rip-off.

I suggest clear glass pebbles for inside the champagne glasses – coloured glass detracts from the things you want to sell.
And I’m so so sorry for noticing, but aren’t the ring holders a bit phallic-looking? If anyone else notices, it might put them off taking off any of the rings to try on.

Love the champagne glasses – the earrings look great! The phallic nature of the ring holders hadn’t occurred to me but it did seem a bit of a faff to get them off to try them on. Just my opinion though!

I like the champagne glasses. What if you tried the Roy G. Biv gradation with the chips inside them too (or use something with a more flat texture like gumballs sorted by colour so as not to compete with the awesome sparkley-ness of your earrings!)
As for the fear of the blow-away ring pins – If you can find them, some stores sell wax ‘buttons’. They are little dime-size discs of wax that are super-sticky and are made to hold taper candles so they stay straight in holders. Illuminations used to carry them, and I think IKEA too. They are very strong, and I have been able to stand a taper just on a plate or saucer and it hasn’t budged!
Have a great time at the show! (Argyle purse ROCKS!)

In response to the phalic nature of the pins, I don’t really think that’s a factor nor should it be. Our world is filled with obelisks and they are as phalic as it gets, yet the government sees these things as a way to honor our history and our dead. If that turns off a customer, so be it. They need a sense of humor. To prevent theft, put a doll head or make a bobble thingy on top. A fimo ball of coolness and color maybe. A styrofoam decorated thing-a-ma-jing. Paint the pins a dark color. Wrap wire around the pins for “arms” to hold more rings and to add security by coiling the ends a few times around like a simple puzzle.
I think for the earings you should stick with a dark screen or fabric to hook the earings through either as they are or on paper labels. The glasses are absolutely beautiful, but I want the whole situation, not just part of it. I also feel like they are easy to steal as you have them. The dark background is the best way to make the colors pop. I’m thinking in terms of eye candy pieces, not the whole party so to speak.
I love the record stand and collander.
I hope you have a great day and sell all you take with you.

Wow! your display is stunning. Mine are never that good, but you have inspired me to try and display my sewing a little more creatively.
Missing you!

Hi Simone, I wish I were at the sale, because I’d buy at least five bags – maybe I’ll be lucky and you’ll have some left over to look at the next time I see you. Here in Hamburg there was a great antique flea market at Colonnaden today and I bought three intereting hand-made brooches for very little money, 1930s from the Sudentenland, formerly Germany, that might prove to be inspiration for future bead jewelry. Too bad you were not here because we could have had lots of fun and maybe bought out several people. Hope to talk to you soon. Love RT

It will pay for you to invest your time and to make a concerted effort in looking for discount Ray Ban sunglasses; you could begin by checking with your favorite and local department store; or, you should check out any good optician’s shop where you are sure to come across some attractive closeouts as well as special offers.
